Terril Waterschei

The Terril of Waterschei rises 165 metres above the landscape of Genk and As, on the edge of Belgium's first National Park. Shaped by its past as the coal waste dump of the Waterschei mine, active between 1924 and 1987, the site today is a protected landscape and thriving nature reserve. Rare species like the nightjar, skylark, smooth snake and natterjack toad have made it their home, while 435 plant species make it the most botanically diverse mining site in all of Limburg.
